The Ophelia Memoirs (in process)
A reality fiction short story collection penned by Emily Branden about her early twenties in Manhattan living on 3rd and C, thriving off plays and drugs, and late nights with musician lovers. Emily's bold detail and insightful style makes each story good medicine.
Here's an excerpt from the collection:
"I guess it was after he'd sent me for his third americano of the day, down to the new café that opened on B closer to C thank god, that I figured he kinda liked me. The fetching of the coffee as an intern during the Monica Lewinsky days included several opportunities for conversation. Waiting for him to dig out the money from his pants pocket, interrupting the rehearsal to hand him the coffee, showing up one morning to score extra points with one already there for him. It was all very intimate very soon.
In fact, the first night I stayed with him was the first night we went out. I had died my hair bright red much to my horror as my gay roommates assured me I looked great. I went to the 3rd St. Studio dreading the reactions. Like everyone would somehow finally see how hard I was trying. Check out the Wisconsin girl gone bad. But all he said was, 'Cuuuute.' In this low voice that I still can't let go of. From then on he called me Red. There are some still who only know me as that. And the color, well it just stuck."
